More About the School

History

Established in 1920, the school was originally housed in the gracious old family mansion, “Morningside”, the home of Peter and Mary Davis. The main school building, designed after the style of Sir Herbert Baker, is now a National Monument. The 11 hectare estate has developed into the present complex of school buildings, trees, gardens and playing fields.

School Governing Body

The School Governing Body members are elected to assist with the organisation and finances of the school. The school aims to promote the active participation of girls, staff and parents at all times.

Management of the School

The Principal is responsible for the management of the school and she is assisted by two Deputy Principals, five Heads of Department, administrative staff and a dedicated and well-qualified teaching staff.

Academic Life

The school has an outstanding record of achievements in the National SC Examinations as well as in the subsequent successes of the girls in tertiary education, and in their chosen professions and occupations. Girls’ High offers the following Senior Certificate subjects:

Sylvia Vietzen Community Centre

The Sylvia Vietzen Community Centre is a versatile venue which can accommodate large functions.The Dynapoint floor makes it ideal for:

Information and Communication Technology

GHS has three Computer Centres equipped with modern multi-media computers. Learners at GHS are taught computer skills that they will need at tertiary institutions or in the work place. Technology is also used by the teaching staff as a tool to enhance the quality of education provided. 18 Smart Boards have been installed in classrooms. GHS has a dedicated connection to the Internet through which all the computers can access the World Wide Web. Extensive use is made of this valuable resource.

Boarding Establishment

The Boarding Establishment is controlled by a Boarder Superintendent, assisted by a full-time Lady Warden, Catering Managers, Housekeepers, Resident Staff and a Nursing Sister. 220 Boarders can be accommodated. Every effort is made to create a caring and happy environment.

Physical Maintenance

The Estates Manager and Maintenance Advisers, assisted by their labour team, are responsible for the physical maintenance of the school buildings and grounds.

Other Amenities

  • The School Shop stocks new and second hand uniforms and a variety of other requirements.
  • A Refectory is available to the learners.
