The Afrikaans Department
The Afrikaans Department has five well qualified and experienced educators whose aim is to help learners to communicate in a second language and to help them experience another culture so that they may be enriched. Although our task is made more difficult by the fact that our learners come from a very English environment where little or even no Afrikaans is heard save that in the classroom, we are very proud of the strides that many learners make and of their ability to communicate fluently and effectively. This can be seen in the excellent matric results that are achieved by our learners, a fair percentage of whom achieve an A symbol.
In order to aid learners who need to improve their vocabulary and reading skills, we have had the Lesers is Leiers (Readers are Leaders) programme installed on the computers in one of the computer rooms. This enables learners to progress from one level to another at their own pace. Furthermore, they can work on these skills in their own time in the afternoons after school and during breaks.
