"Consumer Studies provides excellent preparation for the entrepreneurial challenges of the real world"

Real World Learning

Consumer Studies is part of the FET phase for Grade 10-12. The Consumer Studies Department adopts a dynamic real world approach to topics related to this field of study. One of the highlights of the course, which provides excellent preparation for the entrepreneurial challenges of the real world, is when learners select a practical area of specific interest, create a business plan and develop a small-scale production system for their chosen product or service. Learners also explore and learn about a wide range of consumer-related issues including:

  • Consumer rights and responsibilities
  • Drawing up and managing budgets
  • Dealing with customer complaints constructively and effectively
  • Following the correct procedures when purchasing food and hiring services
  • Nutrition, and how to make healthy food choices
  • Making environmentally responsible choices when purchasing food, clothing and appliances
  • Understanding fashion and the underlying social trends that influence it.
