History

Developing Informed Citizens

History, as it is taught nowadays, is a far cry from the ‘old days’ when it seemed to consist of little more than memorising lists of facts and dates, the relevance of which never seemed quite clear. The new learning programmes focus primarily on developing a wide range of skills and abilities to prepare learners to take their place as informed citizens in modern society.

History is also one of the few school subjects which is directly about people, what they have thought, felt and done in the past. The study of history therefore provides us with a better understanding of how the actions of people impact on us today and cast some light on our current situation.

As part of our programme at GHS we undertake excursions to places of historical interest within Pietermaritzburg and KwaZulu Natal. Debates, discussions and role plays are also used to broaden knowledge, insight and understanding.
