Nurturing Girls' Talents
At Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School we believe that passion is an essential ingredient for success. We are fortunate to have wonderful facilities (except for an ‘astroturf’ which we are working towards) and a core of committed coaches. These coaches are responsible for nurturing and teaching our sports girls, and, if they have sufficient talent and passion, turning them into winners. To be a winner you have to give of your best. We are as excited about a C Team player who achieves to her full potential as we are about a 1st Team winning the league.
But the world loves winners, and in this respect GHS has not let her supporters down. Many of our top sports girls display real passion for sport. They are as excited about the preparation and training for an event as they are about the matches. Individual and team successes are numerous, with many achieving top accolades. We salute all who give of their very best.
Current major successes:
2007
- the 1st Hockey Team won the KZN Midlands League
- the 1st Hockey Team reached the finals at the National Schoolgirls Festival
- the 1st Basketball Team were the top school in KwaZulu Natal
- the Swimming Team were second at the National Schoolgirls ‘Top Ten’ Gala
- the Waterpolo Team were the runners-up at the National Schoolgirls ‘Top Ten’ event
2008
- the swimmers brought home the Inter-Schools Gala Shield for the 44th year in succession
- the Waterpolo Team were the runners-up at the National Schoolgirls ‘Top Ten’ event
- the 1st Hockey Team were winners once again of the KZN Midlands League and the top Kwa-Zulu Natal school at both the National Schoolgirls Festival and the St Mary’s (Johannesburg) Tournament – placed 3rd and 4th respectively in both tournaments
- the 1st Netball Team won the Umgungundlovu Tournament and were third in the KwaZulu Natal Tournament
- Cross-country: winners of the Midlands Senior Inter-Schools Relay event
- Winners of the KZN Invitation Basketball tournament
