Sarah Van Rensburg – Head Boarder 2010

About GHS

Good times!

Going back to the GHS Boarding Establishment every afternoon is probably the most exciting part of my day. I find it quite comforting to walk into the hostel and see it abuzz with activity as girls prepare themselves for their afternoon commitments. These commitments could range from swimming and hockey to choir or debating or paying a visit to the grannies with cookies to simply just settling over a cup of warm tea and spending a few hours with friends in the park.

I’ve realized that getting involved in all that GHS has to offer, makes the afternoons pass more quickly, giving me less time to miss home. I find it more accessible being a boarder, as it means all school activities are within close proximity. This means I spend less time traveling to and from school and rather more time fulfilling the commitments I have.

Meal times are usually festive and the dining room, which seats the entire BE, is always filled with chatter. It is during this time, we get to appreciate the good spread Mrs De Bruin and her staff provide for us. The hour and a half of prep in the evenings gives plenty of time for all our homework, projects or assignments. Before bed, a half hour of silence gives us time just to relax, gather our thoughts and recollect our day.

Being part of the BE is like being at a permanent sleepover, except of course, with a few rules and a definite bedtime. The friends I have made here have become like sisters to me as we get to know each other both inside and out. I have definitely had the wonderful chance to develop a sisterhood with not only the girls in my grade, but the girls in the grades above and below too.

We girls have plenty support should we ever have a problem when we are away from home. Miss Fowler, Mrs Goddard, the Matrons and the Boarder Mistresses are always willing to help if we are faced with a crisis or just need a chat. There are also the caring hands of Sister Strydom if we find ourselves too sick to be at school one day.

Over the years the BE has become like a home and the girls that fill it have become like family. I am very content being a boarder and couldn’t imagine my life otherwise.
