Developing Young Artists
One word describes the atmosphere we try to create in the art department and that word is FUN! What’s more, it all takes place in well lit venues with lots of space. We have a separate Art Theory venue, well supplied with reference books and slides. As a Department we take pride in developing every learner who comes into the Art room either as a general classroom learner or one who chooses to join our Art Society. The department is equipped with a kiln and a printing press, as well as easels and a sculpture section, and so the learners are trained in a variety of skills. These they can put into use when they leave school as entrepreneurial craft makers or as leisure time artists or, for many, the pursuit of design or Art courses at University level.
Grade 10 learners are given training in drawing and painting while they are also given the opportunity to explore ceramic sculpture, sculpture and simple printing methods. The Grade 11 year is seen as an extension year in these disciplines as well as a year in which learners find the medium they would like to specialise in and the kinds of subject matter they wish to pursue. Grade 12 learners hone the skills they have specialized in to develop strong portfolios of work. As a department we organize day trips out of school so that senior learners can be exposed to different places and kinds of subject matter.
A large, beautifully lit, sculpture studio was opened in 2008 so that all the related activities and mess can be confined to a large open working space. We are intent on developing learners in their appreciation of their surroundings and encourage them to translate what they see and experience into artworks.
