English

A rich and vibrant department

The English Department is a rich and vibrant one that takes full advantage of the many members of staff who are a part of it. Because we have teachers who are also involved in Geography, Drama, Physical Education and Life Orientation, teaching across the curriculum becomes a realistic option. To balance this, we have a number of teachers specializing exclusively in the language. This means that we have a secure basis of specialist knowledge from which there can be growth and development of both the teaching and learning of English First Language.

Our syllabus is firmly based on the New Curriculum Statement, and the learning programmes devised for the various grades are tailored to meet the Learning Outcomes and Assessment Standards that are laid out by the Education Department. In this way, learners are exposed to a wide range of literature, language structures and genres of writing that better equip them for life in a society wherein there are multiple modes of communication. In addition, the diverse pedagogies of our various teachers means that learners are able to engage with a variety of teaching and learning styles, thereby enabling them to discover learning strategies that are best suited to their individual intelligence types.
