Geography

Developing a life long interest in the world

Geography is offered as a subject from Grade 8 to Grade 12. It is semesterised in the junior classes and is taken as a subject for Matric from Grade 10. The new NCS syllabus has been implemented in Grades 8 and 9 and the FET syllabus in Grades 10, 11 and 12.

A wide range of topics is covered in the various syllabi and every effort is made to keep up to date with the latest developments in the Geographic field. Resource material is bought on an ongoing basis including DVD’s dealing with current issues. GIS is still in its infancy, but some of the theory behind GIS has been introduced at Grade 10 and 11 levels. A GIS computer programme, with a more practical component to it, has been purchased.

There is regular liaison with other schools in the Pietermaritzburg area regarding the setting and moderation of papers at Grade 12 level. Cluster meetings provide a forum for discussion and debate on the demands of the new syllabus.
