Life Sciences

What we do in the Life Sciences Curriculum
Learners in all three senior grades have a chance to learn more about their bodies and how they function. They are given the chance to study from fresh material and to dissect organs e.g. kidneys, hearts and eyes in order to enrich their learning experience. They also make use of microscopes, electron micrographs, projected 35 mm slides, videos and DVDs, as well as media resources, including the internet.
The new syllabus includes topics that are of particular relevance to those living in Africa. These are the study of diseases such as TB, malaria, and AIDS, and the exploration of man's origins through a study of fossil records and South Africa's place as the Cradle of Mankind. Important environmental issues such as global warming, trade in wildlife and poaching, and the problem of invasive alien plant species are also dealt with. Other issues of general topical interest that are discussed include cloning, genetically modified food, surrogate motherhood, test tube babies and abortion. Sound attitudes and values are fostered through these discussions.
