Natural Sciences

A solid foundation

Natural Sciences is a compulsory subject for learners in Grade 8 and 9.

The curriculum is divided into four modules, namely: Earth and Beyond, Life and Living, Matter and Materials and Energy and Change. What this means is that all the topics relate to Biology, Physics and Chemistry. Amongst others, topics include: static and current electricity; density; light; some systems of the human body; adaptations of living organisms to their environment; chemical compounds and types of reactions; experimental design; plant studies and some microbiology.

In both grades, the content is covered in a way that relates to the three learning outcomes. One outcome relates to various types of investigations and experimentation. The second concerns acquiring, applying and categorising scientific knowledge, and the third incorporates the interrelationships between science, technology, society and the environment.

The learners engage in various types of activities, both theoretical and practical, from the perspective of natural sciences.
